Underlying Program Goals:

// lead students in HANDS-ON construction combined with a design studio education in order to discover new intersections between design and fabrication.

// foster a COLLABORATIVE studio environment such that students engage more fully in a dialogue with their peers, practitioners, context and communities.

// implement architecture, design and the making of space to catalyze POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE and stewardship of our built environment.

Reasearch Roles:

DESIGN LEAD> Megan/Chris (Support: Terry and Billie)
  • Manage all individual/group based design documentation and synthesize the team's design principals for each site.
  • Define new modes of investigation as the become required.
  • Manage construction documentation
  • Coordinate documentation of design proposals/submissions for community/client reviews as necessary
For Wed: Develop group decision making process to be used as necessary moving forward. Define the primary theme/concept for each site based on wed's crit and Saturday's discussion.

AUXILIARY DESIGN LEAD> Ben/Mike (Support: Billie)
  • Investigate projection and associated requirements
  • Investigate PV panels and light emission and associated requirements
  • Investigate sound generation and associated requirements
  • Investigate wind interaction and associated requirements
  • Investigate operability/inhabitablity and associated requirements
For Wed: Begin research of PV panels in fabric structures & present results. Report on cohesive investigations in projection/ sound generation thus far, and strategies to move forward.

INTERNAL CONNECTIONS LEAD> Billie (Support: Ilsa and Lindsay)
  • carefully consider, report, design and coordinate internal connection points
  • propose creative and feasible modes of internal connection and tension systems
  • define a security system to insure protection of deployed canopies
  • source materials for all proposals
For Wed: Begin research of above and present 3 min. connection point options for each site with list of required components.

EXTERNAL CONNECTIONS LEAD> Lindsay-Site_02/ Terry-Site_02+03 (Support:Ben and Mike)
  • carefully consider, report, design and coordinate all connection points on all sites.
  • propose creative and feasible modes of external support/connection/armature
  • define a security system to insure protection of deployed canopies
  • source materials for all proposals
For Wed: Begin research of above and present 3 min. connection point options for each site with list of required components.

MATERIALS RESEARCH LEAD> Ilsa (Support: Megan)
  • investigate and Source feasible fabric materials
  • lead investigations in surface treatment: holes, cuts, tension, billowing, etc.
  • propose and coordinate mock-up investigations as required
For Wed: Begin research of above and present 3 min. fabric options.

CLIENT RELATIONS LEAD: Becca/Megan (Support: Kyle and Charles)
  • define content and schedule for gallery exhibition, add support materials for approval by BAC Exhibition Board as req.
  • schedule 'opening day event' with roxbury (via Nataka), and make informed case for/against another community design review
  • coordinate work flow/present site_03 work to Back Bay Neighborhood commission. Interface with Halverson (via Rob Adams) Green Alley proposal
  • draft proposal/schematic content for UdB book
For Wed: ...
