Underlying Program Goals:

// lead students in HANDS-ON construction combined with a design studio education in order to discover new intersections between design and fabrication.

// foster a COLLABORATIVE studio environment such that students engage more fully in a dialogue with their peers, practitioners, context and communities.

// implement architecture, design and the making of space to catalyze POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE and stewardship of our built environment.

projection ideas

check out some of soo hwa-yuan's work, specifically vortical @ sfmoma and the tokyo metro @ sfmoma
he's a san francisco based artist that works a lot in architectural scale tensile fabric installations

also, in the spirit of do-it-yourself/do-it-when-no-one-is-looking, the good people over at graffiti research lab have a "how to" for projections: http://www.instructables.com/id/PROJECTION-BOMBING/

these are some of their better projection projects:
dripping ink
txtualhealing

wind/sound

I 've been thinking about using video frames of fabric in the wind (a good example of what I'm thinking of is being caught up in a clothes line or running under the parachute in elementary school) projected directly on areas of the fabric in the gallery and (even if only for the opening) looping non-congruent sound of the same thing.

I thought it might be an interesting way to animate them and confuse the line of int/ext, tense/free, etc.

So rad? So played?

Thoughts from Virginia

- uploaded new site_01 information to the side bar. Are the links not working for everyone? (comment please)

- REVIEW TIME: we will have our work pinned up by 7:00pm (sharp!) so that a few representatives from Roxbury and Karen Nelson can come to the review. We will pin up not as individual groups, but categorize the layout according to sites 1-3 to have a broader discussion about each site and the proposals. How do folks feel about another room for the SD review?
(comment please)

- Its quite windy here today in stevensburg, VA and we've got a lot of beautiful wind chimes out in the yard. Has anyone considered sound generation via hanging objects from the canopy in the exterior sites? It could be really beautiful...
(comment please)

thats all for now. keep us posted if you have any questions or concerns.

Site_02: Roxbury material added

ACAD site plan/2 sections and sketch-up model of the UNLR community center added to the sidebar...

class tomorrow

Folks, I've added site_02(roxbury) siteplan and the titleblock to the sidebar in this year's material. Everyone should be working in vignettes/site documents/and models for tomorrow to discuss how each of you are choosing to prepare/focus on the SD deadline - March 04th.

If you have not already, please send me the site documnetation you are responsible for in pdf/acad etc. format, so that we may share the information.

Updates/ SD Deadline

I went to windmill fabrics today and picked up:
- 60"x60" exterior grade nylon (forest green)
- 60"x60" exterior grade cotton/ lycra blend (chartreuse)
- 10 yards nylon chord
- 2 packs, 1/4" dia. grommets

I also went in today and cut (12) 4"x4" grid squares for testing on Saturday.

Terry and I will pick up materials for the room framework friday morning, and Pax and others may begin to set it up pre-class Saturday.

SD DEADLINE REMINDER: our SD deadline/ review will be on March 04. Be think if you'd like to do this as teams or as individuals. We will have a group crit with a guest, review the work with our associates at NeRD, and select a design to pursue for the rest of the semester. All submissiosn will be required to do both a cube model and a full scale room-frame mock-up in addition to site documentation and diagrams for all three sites. (this makes group work seem the most realistic)

Sections for Saturday

Here are the vignettes from Wednesday as well as some sectional images. The first section is the 'camel back' which is interesting because it allows for a visual interaction between the interior and exterior activity. This last section is inspired by Billie's single person 'tee-pee' to show the duality in having a small personal unit coupled with a larger open space.

Group_A 2/7 modeling photos

sat.'s group_A are loaded into the class photo library, access via the link on the right side toolbar. We should get everyone's photos centralized into this library at some point. captions denote my group's photos.

fiber artist

also, for inspiration, check out some works by a local artist that uses large scale fiber/cantenary constructs:

images from yesterday's experiments. to recap the design initiative for wednesday: provide 4 vignettes at 8.5x11 showing your group's 4 structures -- canopy, thru-way, exhibiton, freeform -- populated with users, entourages, callouts (fill up the whole page!). feel free to think of these constructs at any scale, and use any preferred media technique (colored pencil, photoshop, magazine collage, etc.)

first set of experiments

first set of tensile experiment using the all-thread frame. in the initial process, we are looking at free-form iterations; however, we will quickly need to develop a rigor for evaluating our studies by isolating variables.

to consider:
_saddle variants
_add'l exterior attachment points
_add'l interior attachment points
_internal ring (cone)
_apertures

see yall tomorrow. i can meet before 12 if anyone is interested // cg

frozen form-making

http://picasaweb.google.com/charlesmgarcia/TRCPrototypesUmich06?authkey=8Zs_9p0oi6E&feat=directlink

here are a few images of fiber reinforced concrete experiments using a similar cube-frame strategy for generating the form. instead of spandex, we used a loose-weave mesh from jo-ann fabrics. after achieving the desired form, we painted the fabric with quik-crete and allowed to cure overnight. not incredibly clean results, but certainly a great way to maintain a form library for reference.

Class01 - comin' out swingin'!

Thanks for a great effort Saturday afternoon to nearly complete the two form-finding boxes. We're all anxious to start testing on wed. night at 7:15. Be sure to bring in 5 precedent/inspirational images. We'll have fabric and fishing line ready to go. I wanted to be sure that you noticed the new photo album on the side bar, as well as all of the course materials you've received to date (just in case you misplaced them during all our BUILDing!) - ks cg ph
